Northern Territory Government Provides Certainty for Construction Industry

Master Builders Northern Territory has welcomed the Northern Territory Government’s decision not to adopt the National Construction Code (NCC) 2025 updates at this time, describing it as a practical and considered approach in the current economic climate.

Chief Executive Officer Sallyann Innes said the decision reflects a clear understanding of the pressures facing Territory businesses and the importance of maintaining momentum across the construction sector.

“The Government has made a measured decision that recognises the current operating environment and the need to provide certainty for industry,” Ms Innes said.

“At a time when businesses are managing rising costs, workforce constraints and ongoing supply chain challenges, stability in the regulatory framework is critical.”

Ms Innes said the announcement aligns with the Government’s broader commitment to reducing red tape and delivering a year of certainty for Territory businesses.

“This decision sends a strong signal that the Government is focused on practical outcomes supporting industry to keep building, employing and delivering for Territorians.”

Construction remains one of the Northern Territory’s most important economic drivers, supporting thousands of jobs and businesses across the supply chain from contractors and trades through to suppliers, manufacturers and professional services.

“For every project delivered in the Territory, the economic benefits extend well beyond the construction site,” Ms Innes said.

“The construction sector has a significant multiplier effect driving activity across the entire economy, supporting local jobs, small businesses and regional communities.”

Master Builders NT said maintaining a stable and predictable pipeline of work, alongside a practical regulatory environment, will be key to ensuring the industry can continue to meet demand for housing, infrastructure and major projects.

“The Territory’s construction industry has the capability and capacity to deliver,” Ms Innes said.

“Decisions like this help ensure that industry can focus on what matters building homes, infrastructure, creating jobs and contributing to a stronger Northern Territory economy.”
